The earth's lithosphere is a very active system. The action of air and water continually recycles the surface involving the formation and breakup of huge quantities of sedimentary rock over time. This continual erosion and deposition also allows the burial and preservation of various products of life forms - creating fossil fuels. On a large scale the lithosphere is in motion driven by the internal heat of the earth - which is due to the presence of radioactive materials. ChaCha!litho
