About Relative Dating
The relative dating process attempts to date fossils based on the deposit in which they lie in. It is important to first determine whether archaeological or bone materials are contemporaneous with the deposits in which they are found. Primarily, the site's stratigraphy, or the relative vertical placement of objects in the soil, must be determined. At an undisturbed site, materials at the lowest levels should be the oldest. In the absence of an undisturbed stratified site, there are less reliable means that are available for determining a relative time sequence.
