The SR-71Blackbird still holds the absolute speed record over a straight course of 2193.167 MPH or mach 3.31. The operating speed was mach 3+. That record is 35 years old and still stands. Blackbird was retired by the U.S. Air Force in 1990 after 25 years of service. Three of the planes have been transferred to NASA for research and development of an aerospace plane.
