How has satellite technology helped the study of oceanography?
Satellites assist Oceanographers at MBARI as they study the physical characteristics of seawater and the movement of water masses due to winds, waves, tides, and currents. They are particularly interested in the effects these physical processes have on living organisms in the oceans. It also helps view & understand tsunamis using examples from the recent earthquake in Japan and the tsunami event it generated. ChaCha on!

About Oceanography
Oceanography, which is sometimes referred to as oceanology or marine science, is a division of Earth science that studies all aspects of the ocean. It covers an extremely broad spectrum of topics, including marine life and ecosystem dynamics, as well as ocean currents, waves, plate tectonics and features of the ocean floor. Some of these features include exotic biomes such as cold seeps and hydrothermal vents.
