How is a republic better then a direct democracy?

Republic comes from the Latin res publica, which means 'public thing'-in other words a country 'owned' by its people rather than by a monarch. Direct democracy is a form of government in which people collectively make decisions for themselves, rather than having their political affairs decided by representatives. Direct Democracy only works well in small groups.
