How is carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere similar to the glass in a greenhouse?
Both the glass of a greenhouse and a greenhouse gas such as CO2 can be said to trap heat, although in very different ways. A CO2 molecule absorbs and re-emits IR radiation. A greenhouse simply prevents the rise of hot air, keeping it warm. -ChaCha

About Greenhouse Gas
Greenhouse gasses are gasses that trap heat and infrared radiation in the atmosphere. On Earth they include water vapor, methane, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and ozone. Even with the level of greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere rising, at least we don't look like Venus with temperatures in the 400 - 800 degree Fahrenheit range.
