The president do NOT pick his successor. The way a president is elected is by a general election. To win the general election and thus, the presidency, a candidate must win a majority of electoral votes. Each state has electoral votes based on its number of senators and representatives.

Voters in Presidential Elections do not directly vote for the President, instead they vote for electors representing their state.
