How long did Spain occupy Cuba?
After Columbus' arrival, Cuba became a Spanish colony, ruled by a Spanish governor though in 1762 the city was briefly held by Great Britain before being returned in exchange for Florida. Iincreased tensions between Spain and the United States, resulting in the Spanish-American War, finally led to Spanish withdrawal, and in 1902 Cuba gained formal independence.
