There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. However, about 2,000 of those languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers. The most popular language in the world is Mandarin Chinese.

There are 6,800 known languages in the 200 countries of the world. 2,261 have writing systems, and the rest are only spoken.

Scientists have not been able to come up with an exact number of languages, but estimates are around 1,000.
