How many phases does the moon have?
The moon goes through phases because it orbits Earth about once a month, or about every 28 days. As we look up at the moon, we watch it slowly move east. As it gets farther from the sun, it appears to get bigger. There are 9 phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent and dark moon. Keep doing the ChaCha!

About Moon
The moon is a planet that revolves around the Earth. Reflection from the sun's rays make the moon 'shine'; it does not give out light of its own. In ancient times the Moon was thought to represent the feminine nature, while the Sun was thought to represent the more active, male nature.
