Moon The moon goes through phases because it orbits Earth about once a month, or about every 28 days. As we look up at the moon, we watch it slowly move east. As it gets farther from the sun, it appears to get bigger. There are 9 phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent and dark moon.
