There were nine planets until scientists decided that Pluto is no longer a planet. Now there are 8. Live long and ChaCha!

A scientist would say 514 (as of March 2011, including planets in our solar system). Src: Wolfram|Alpha

The number of planets dropped to the eight significantly larger bodies that had cleared their orbit (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune), and a new class of dwarf planets was created, initially containing three objects (Ceres, Pluto and Eris). ChaCha!

Until just a few years ago, there were 9 planets in the Solar System. However, the International Astronomical Union decided that Pluto is no longer a planet, so there are now only 8 planets in the Solar System. ChaCha again

The eight planets that orbit the sun are (in order from the sun): Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Another large body is Pluto, now classifies as a dwarf planet or plutoid.

Our Solar System is home to 8 (formerly 9) planets, and a number of dwarf planets. To the date of this writing, 342 planets have been discovered orbiting 289 stars.

About Jupiter
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun in our solar system, and the largest. Jupiter is 1/1000th the size of the sun, and at least twice as big as every other planet in our system. In fact, it is so big, you could put 1,321 earths inside the planet, but only 318 times as massive. It is a gas giant comprised largely of hydrogen with a just about a quarter of the mass being helium. Jupiter has a small ring system and over 63 moons. It looks like it has stacks of bands, and the most prominent feature is The Great Red Spot, a hurricane three times the size of Earth that has been raging for the last 500 years. Jupiter is the 3rd brightest object in the night sky after the moon and Venus.
About Pluto
At one time Pluto was the ninth planet in our solar system, that is until 2006. Scientists decided that Pluto was too small to be a planet, and was redesignated as a "dwarf planet," and is the largest body in the Kuiper Belt, which is a belt of asteroids that encircles the entire solar system. Pluto, depending on where it is in its orbit between 4.4 billion and 7.4 billion km from the sun.
About Uranus
Uranus is the third largest planet in our solar system and is the seventh planet from the sun. Uranus appears blue due to absorption of red light by methane in the upper atmosphere.
