How many pro hockey teams does the United States have?
The National Hockey League was founded in 1917 as a breakaway league from the Canadian National Hockey Association (founded 1909), taking all but one of the NHA's teams. The NHL partially absorbed the rival World Hockey Association in 1979. There are now 30 teams; after the Atlanta Thrashers' move to Winnipeg for 2011-12, there will be 23 in the U.S. and 7 in Canada.
