The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is a bureau of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which assists in disaster relief efforts which overwhelm local area and state government agencies. The agency also provides state and local governments with support of a disaster that overwhelms a state and local agency. FEMA provides rebuilding assistance as well to disaster relief.
About Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, LA on August 29, 2005 and caused 1800 deaths. Eighty per cent of the city was flooded, enormous property damage resulted, and thousands of people fled the city. Many never returned.
