About Washington DC
Officially founded on July 16, 1790, Washington, DC was established by the Constitution of the United States to serve as the nation’s capital. The District is not part of any U.S. state so it is directly overseen by the federal government. The city has a population of around 600,000 people and is located along the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.

Washington is the northwestern most state in the United States. It was the 42nd state to join the Union in 1889. Often referred to as "Washington state" or "the state of Washington" to differentiate it from Washington, D.C., it is the only state named for a U.S. president, after George Washington.
