How often do crayfish molt?
It varies by temperature, feeding, size and age of the crayfish, and available minerals in the water. Molting is related to growth. With the hard exoskeleton, crafish can't just get bigger - there's no room within the existing exoskeleton. In order to grow, they need to molt the old (hard) one, and the new one underneath is soft and expands to a slightly larger size before it hardens. So they'll molt when they get larger than the current exoskeleton becomes too "tight" of a fit. ChaCha on!
