How to fix the resolution on a vizio 42 in hdtv to 1080p?
The HDTV should pick up a signal, whether it be a local digital signal or a signal from a DVD player / satellite, and automatically play it in the 720 or 1080 format depending on the format of the signal . So if you send your HDTV a 1080p signal, then it should display it in 1080p, if the HDTV has the capability to display that format. ChaCha anytime!

Your TV automatically adjusts to 1080p all inputs. Info displays the resolution of the INPUT source, in this case your set-top box. You need to re-configure your set-top box. Make sure you use component, DVI, or HDMI cables to connect the box to the TV (that yellow composite is for SD only). Make sure you set it for a 16:9 TV and make sure it outputs 720p or 1080i.

Turn your TV on and let it play for 10 or 15 minutes. Insert a DVD with the THX Optimizer function into your DVD player and access the main menu. Look for the Options or Set Up setting on the DVD menu and push it.

1080p is a specification of HDTVs referring to the resolution of the HDTV. Known also as "full HD", the term 1080p means that an HDTV displays 1,080 lines of horizontal resolution in progressive scan (simultaneously displaying every line of resolution, contrasted to 1080i, or "interlaced").
