How to time a distributor on a 1971 Buick lesabre?

Rate This Answer

Bring the timing mark up to the split in the crankcase, then check to make sure both valves on the #1 cylinder (right front) are shut so you know it's on the compression/firing stroke. (The crankshaft turns around TWICE for each revolution of the engine, so the TDC mark comes up twice, once for #1, and again for #3. You must make sure you have the #1 piston at TDC, not #3.) Now take the top off the distributor and look at the rotor arm - it should be pointing at the notch in the distributor rim.
