If I use coffee in the same recipe then how necessary is it to have both coffee and coffee liqueur? Can I just subtract the liqueur?

Coffee From personal experience, yes, you can subtract the liqueur. The taste of that is more of a chocolate deep coffee taste than just pure coffee or espresso. Omitting it will probably change the thickness and nothing more, slightly altering taste.
