Is Carnival the same as Mardi Gras?
Brazilian Carnival starts 40 days before Ash Wednesday and lasts for 5 days; according to Rio-Carnival.net, this year's official celebration in Rio runs from February 12 to February 16. Mardi Gras, as we all know, translates into Fat Tuesday, and that particularly obese day on the calendar always falls just before Ash Wednesday. ChaCha!

Mardi Gras is a hugely popular event and holiday celebrated to commemorate the last full day before Ash Wednesday during the season of Lent. Known also as Fat Tuesday, it is famous for parades in New Orleans and a night of hedonistic living.
About Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, which occurs 46 days before Easter. It is preceded each year by Fat Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras. Ash Wednesday is on March 9 this year (2011).
