Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for '5th of May') little significance in Mexico but is observed in the US and other locations around the world, celebrating Mexican heritage. It's not Mexico's Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico. It commemorates Mexico's unlikely victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862, under General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin. Falls on May 5th. In 2011, it is on Thursday, May 5 and for 2012 on Saturday, May 5.

Cinco de Mayo is generally celebrated in Mexico with food, music, and dancing. It is limited primarily to the state of Puebla. ChaCha on!
