About Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is a type of cycling defined by the cyclist riding primarily off road and on rough terrain. Mountain biking is broken up into several different categories: down hill, all mountain, cross country, freeriding, dirt jumping, trials and mountain bike touring. Conceived some time in the 1980s, and popularized in the 1990s and 2000s, mountain biking has labeled an ‘’extreme sport’’ due to the inherent danger of riding down a steep trail over obstacles and off jumps. Modern mountain bikes are built to be durable and come equipped with disc brakes, at least front and more often rear suspension. They have wide and increasingly bigger wheels, up to 29 inches in diameter. The tires are often wide and knobby to increase traction. The handlebars are either flat or have an upward tilt to increase control.
