Is there a difference between droid and android?
The main difference is one of legal definition. Android simply refers to the operating system and software that powers phones built by a number of manufacturers including Motorola. Droid is a term owned by LucasFilm that Verizon had to purchase.

About Android
Android is an operating system (OS) for smartphones. Android was purchased by Google in 2005, and is based on a modified version of the open source Linux kernel. The Android system was designed to compete with Apple iOS and has since passed iOS in terms of market share.
