Mississippi The Mississippi river was at the highest level seen since 1937, when it crested in Memphis at 14.7 feet above flood stage and caused a flood that killed 500 people and swamped 20 million acres of land on 5/5/11. As of 5/9/11, the Mississippi is in major flood stage and expected to continue rising. Residents are urged to quickly evacuate their homes and seek higher ground.
