Antacids neutralize stomach acid. In the case of sodium bicarbonate HCl + NaHCO3 --> NaCl + H2CO3 (carbonic acid) and H2CO3 -> H20 + CO2 So, it basically turns stomach acid into salt water and could make you burp a little. ChaCha on!
