About Christianity
Christianity is a monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. It began as a sect of Judaism in the middle of the first century, but split after suffering persecution from Jews and the Roman government. Christianity remained a persecuted religion until 313 AD, then became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 380 AD. Christianity spread in the coming centuries, and suffered two major schisms - once in 1054 AD between the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, and again in the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation. Worldwide, Christianity has over two billion adherants, is the largest religion in the world, and is the official religion of several countries.
About Easter
Easter is a Christian commemoration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ that is celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon of the vernal equinox. Easter 2011 falls on Sunday, April 24th. Easter is the central religious feast in the Christian liturgical year, but is also celebrated by non-Christians too. Easter egg hunts, the Easter bunny, and candy are some longstanding Easter traditions. Read more about the holiday and see some facts about Easter on the left-hand side of the page!
