Hitler's ancestry is a matter of dispute. His father, Alois Hitler, was the illegitimate child of Maria Schicklgruber. Alois's birth certificate did not name his father and it is speculated that Hitler's grandmother might become pregnant while working as a domestic servant in a Jewish household. Hitler's secrecy about his family and attempts to extinguish any traces to its ancestors might be related to uncertain history of his family tree and high incidence of insanity in his family.
