About Holidays
The word 'holidays' comes from the original of 'holy days.' These days, there are holidays for just about everything, from the serious and religious to the fun and outrageous. Did you know that there is a World UFO day? Well, in case you didn't, it is on July 2. So get out your binoculars and foil hats and head out to Area 51 for a picnic!
About Veterans Day
The first Veterans Day, then called Armistice Day, was on Nov. 11, 1919. Its purpose was to commemorate the signing of the temporary halt to hostilities between the Allied forces and Germany. This treaty effectively ended what was called at the time the "Great War," or "The War to End All Wars," or as we call it today, World War I. The treaty was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour. After it became apparent wars were not a thing of the past, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day to honor the sacrifices our service members have made all over the world.
About Columbus Day
Columbus Day commemorates the day Christopher Columbus's ships first sighted land after leaving the Canary Islands off the coast of Spain, October 12, 1492. It is celebrated in the United States on the second Monday in October.
About Labor Day
Labor Day is a holiday that is observed in the United States on the first Monday in September. The day was set aside to celebrate the contributions of America's workers, and it is also considered the final weekend of summer. Labor Day is on September 6, 2010 and September 5 in 2011.
