Ear infections can be caused by viruses or bacteria. They can also be caused by fluid backup in the ear causing inflammation.
If your eustachian tubes become blocked, fluid cannot drain and bacteria or viruses start growing there. That is an ear infection.
Soap or water or bacteria that enters the ear from the outside can't get into this space to cause an infection.
