What is a caliphate?
The term 'caliphate' (from the Arabic 'khila-fa') refers to the 1st system of government established in Islam. In theory, it is a constitutional republic in which the head of state (the Caliph) are representatives of the people and must govern according to Islamic law, limiting their power over citizens. It began with the prophet Muhammad's disciples as a continuation of a system he established, representing the political and not theological unity of Muslims as theology was a personal matter.
