Alcatraz was a maximum security prison from the mid 1930-60s. It is an island close to San Fransisco so escape was near impossible.

Alcatraz is an island off San Fransisco. It's the site of the former federal prison, military fortification, & lighthouse. There are no one prisoners there anymore in fact they do tours now. Thanks!
