The word 'Antebellum' generally refers to the period of Southern Confederacy pride before the Civil War since antebellum literally translates to 'before the war.' With that being said, the group 'Lady Antebellum' literally translates to 'lady before the war.'
The trio that comprise Lady Antebellum claim that the name comes from the nostalgia which their music brings about the Southern United States. They say it was linked to some photos they were taking in front of an 'antebellum' style house and the word came out and it kinda just stuck with them.

I am so glad to finally see someone else who has a clue about the history of the U. S. Why they would choose this name for their band really speaks to their ignorance of the slave South or maybe its just their apathy about racism in general, The Antebellum South was the epitome and idealistic image of "lilly" white ladies in big dresses who had slaves picking cotton and "schucking and jivin'" in their spare time. And to think that it sounded "cute" and "pretty" is ridiculous.

Here is the answer from the band... "We got together, you know, as just songwriters. Became friends and started writing songs. And we wanted to put up a MySpace page. So we wanted to take pictures to put on MySpace to get people's attention, and we ended up going out outside of Nashville to this little town. It's this historic town called Franklin, Tennessee, and there's tons of antebellum homes with the columns, like, from Gone With the Wind. And we ended up in front of these houses, and Charles, the other lead singer in the group, he kind of looked back through the pictures and said, "Wow, that's a really beautiful antebellum home." And I said, "What does that mean?" I didn't know what it meant. But after he explained it to me, I was like, "Oh, yeah. It is. It's really pretty." And he goes, "Isn't that a cool word?" And then we just put a bunch of words in front of it, and "Lady" is what stuck. " It's about the architecture and the beautiful costumes, so ease up on the insults and presumptions before you display your ignorance. Everything in the world is not about colour!

the only time i've ever heard this term was in history class while learning about the Antebellum South, a.k.a. the Slave South. it makes me worried whether or not the band knew this when they chose this as a group name. Either they're racist or really stupid. But the music is okay.
