Chowder is a thick & rich & contains chunky food. Soup is basically a combination of vegetables and/or meat, cooked in a liquid.

"Chowder" is any thick soup, but the word usually refers to a mixture fish and vegetables in either a cream or tomato base.

Chowder is typically a rich, creamy soup with ingredients that usually include seafood, vegetables and cream.

It is just a thick soup. Anything that makes the soup thick and be a chowder. Fish, Shellfish and corn are all types of chowders.
