The Union or the Northern States won the American Civil war which lasted from April 12, 1861 until April 9, 1865. In an untraditional gesture and as a sign of The Union's respect and anticipation of peacefully restoring Confederate states to the Union, Robert E. Lee, the Confederate's leader, was permitted to keep his sword and his horse, Traveller. President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth just 5 days later.
