When is Eid?
August 30 or 31: Depending on where Muslims are around the world, the sighting of a sliver of the new moon at sunset signals it is Eid al-Fitr. For 2011, followers in North America, Europe and the Middle East will see the moon and argue Eid falls on Aug 30, while India, Pakistan and Southeast Asia will see it and argue for Aug 31. About Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr is the Islamic holiday that marks the end of the Ramadan month of fasting. Sighting the new moon after Ramadan determines which day it will be celebrated, and Muslims usually partake in festivities all day. Eid means "festivity" and Fitr means "breaking the fast."
