where did the ferret come from

Topics: AnimalsMammalsFerrets

The origin of ferrets as a domestic animal is unclear; they belong to the weasel family and their closest wild relatives are the European polecat and the Steppe polecat found in Eastern European forests southwards into the Balkans and the Caucasus.

The first domesticated ferrets probably originated from captive breeding of wild polecats, which still exist in Europe and Asia.

Hugh Kinsman

Ferrets were first found in Eastern European forests. The ferret's ancestors likely were encouraged as residents around granaries.

Ferrets are a part of the weasel or polecat family. They are also used for hunting rabbits, but mainly as pets.
