Country music started in the Maritime Provinces and Southern Appalachian Mountains of North America. Immigrants brought the music and instruments of the Old World along with them to this area, such as the fiddle and the banjo.

Country music, also called old-time or "hillbilly" music, emerged in the early decades of the 1900s in Nashville, Tennessee.
