About American Civil War
The American Civil War (or the War Between the States) was a war between the eleven Southern slave states and the twenty northern free states from 1861 to 1865. The Southern states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America, or simply “the Confederacy,” and were led by Jefferson Davis to fight against the twenty states that made up the Union, or United States. The twenty states in the Union had already abolished slavery. The American Civil War is known as one of the most violent times in the history of the United States in which more than 600,000 soldiers gave their lives in war.
