Homework dates back to at least the time of Quintus (50 BC or so), so it's not sure 'who' invented it. Most likely a teacher did.

Homework dates back to at least the mid-19th century, when most students left school after the sixth grade.

Homework-1683, "work done at home," as opposed to work done in the shop or factory; in sense of "lessons studied at home," MORE?

We don't know who "invented" it, but homework didn't become a generally accepted practice in the US until the 1950s. Ask ChaCha!
