The US Declaration of Independence was created in 1776 by the Continental Congress to let the British know the 13 original US states were declaring independence from them. Thomas Jefferson read declarations from all over the country and then created the official Declaration. The anniversary of the approval of the document is celebrated each year on the 4th of July.
