The gas in our intestines comes from several sources: air we swallow, gas seeping into our intestines from our blood, gas produced by chemical reactions in our guts, and gas produced by bacteria living in our guts. This is what causes people to fart.

Farts are caused by nitrogen and oxygen passing through your digestive system and mixing with carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane. In order to leave the body, these gases come out as farts, or flatulence. Add hydrogen sulfide and you get the smell.
