A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a planet's surface or crust, which allows hot magma, volcanic ash and gases to escape from below the surface.Volcanoes occur at plate boundaries and over hot spots. In each of these situations, magma, which is melted rock within the earth's crust, rises to the surface and exits through a volcanic vent, creating new crust.
