2012

2012

Taking advantage of the imminent arrival of the year 2012 which, in the Mayan Calendar, is the date that the world will come to an end, Hollywood gave us its own version of the apocolypse with the movie 2012, starring John Cusack, who we loved in High Fidelity, Say Anything, and so many other great movies.

About 2012

This is a new kind of movie for John Cusack, who usually stars in romantic comedies with an occasional departure for the sake of variety and creative challenge. Maybe he needed a change of pace; unfortunately this movie doesn't give moviegoers a change of pace. With the usual end-of-the-world threats arising (L.A. falls into the ocean, freak eruptions in Yellowstone Park, earthquakes around the world, and mega-mega-tsunamis), scientists and our hero must find out how to save as many people as possible before the ultimate disaster occurs.

Though meeting with tepid critical reviews, the film held its own at the box office against other disaster movies, leading the international box office in its first weekend with $225 million, and ultimately grossing over $769 million worldwide. And that was before the DVD release on March 2, 2010. Directed by Roland Emmerich, who also directed Independence Day, 2012 stars John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Thomas McCarthy, and Woody Harrelson.
