21 Shot Salute

21 Shot Salute

Gun salutes are the firing of cannons as a military honor. Gun salutes have their origins in naval tradition, where a warship would fire its guns out to sea until all ammunition is spent to show it was disarmed. As customs evolved, 21 volley salutes were fired for heads of state, with the number decreasing with the rank of the individual.
