401k

401k

A 401K plan enables employees to save money for retirement in a tax free fashion until the money is withdrawn from the account upon the acceptable retirement age. The funds in the account can be invested in different stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other assets. This was created by Congress in 1981 and is named 401k due to the section of the Internal Revenue Code that describes it.

About 401k

A 401k plan follows an employee throughout his or her career, even when changing employers. There are many benefits to starting a 401k plan. Most employers will match up to a percentage of what you contribute to your plan. That's like being given free money! Dividend, interest and capital gains are not taxed until the money is withdrawn from the account. Also, there are a range of choices as to how you can invest in your 401k plan, giving you customization and flexibility. Whether you prefer short-term or long-term bonds or a heavy emphasis on equities, it's up to you how you invest.
