About 9/11 Attacks

The 911 attacks, sometimes referred to as September 11 or 911, occurred on September 11, 2001 and were coordinated by the al-Qaeda terrorist organization. A group of terrorists hijacked four commercial jet airliners, intentionally crashing two of them UA Flight 175 and AA Flight 11) into the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan, New York City.

Everyone on board the flights were killed and thousands of people in the World Trade Center at the time of the attacks. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center collapsed shortly after the attack. Many people were able to evacuate the building. A total of 2,995 people, including the hijackers and the plane passengers, were killed in the attacks. Another group of hijackers flew AA Flight 77 into the Pentagon shortly after, and fourth plane, UA Flight 93, crashed near Shanksville, PA. The passengers of that flight overwhelmed the highjackers and kept it from hitting its target, which was thought to be the United States Capitol or the White House.

The attacks launched the 'War on Terror', which initially was confined to attacking Afghanistan, where al-Qaeda's leader, Osama bin Laden, was thought to be hiding. The United States then started a buildup of war against Iraq, claiming falsely that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction in order to justify an invasion and occupation of Iraq which started on March 20, 2003.
