Academy Awards

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are a televised award show which recognizes the greatest achievements of the past year in motion pictures. Winning an Academy Award sets movies, actors, and directors apart as being the best in the business.

About Academy Awards

The Academy Awards, or Oscars, are the premiere movie awards show of the year. Watched religiously by movie buffs and all those who love to watch beautiful people walking down the red carpet, the first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, hosted by actor Douglas Fairbanks, director William C. deMille, and presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The black tie event, which awards excellence in cinematic achievements, was first televised in 1953.

Since at least the 6th Academy Awards, the statuette awarded to winners has been referred to as ''Oscar.'' Resembling a golden Art Deco-inspired knight holding a sword and standing on a film reel, the origin of the nickname ''Oscar'' is debated and unclear. Reportedly, actress Bette Davis nicknamed her 1934 award ''Oscar'' after her husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson. But another popular origin story, among others, alleges that the Academy's Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick, saw the award in 1931 and exclaimed that the statue reminded her of her ''Uncle Oscar,'' who was in fact her cousin.

Though ''Oscar'' is the popular name for the award, its original and official name is the Academy Award of Merit. The Academy also awards the Gordon E. Sawyer Award, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the John A. Bonner Medal of Commendation, the Scientific and Engineering Award, the Student Academy Award, and the Technical Achievement Award, as well as honorary Oscars.

The 84th Academy Awards aired on February 26th, 2012 at 7pm ET on ABC, hosted by Billy Crystal.
