About ACT Score

The ACT is the acronym given to the American College Test. It is a standardized test for high schoolers to take for college admissions in the United States. First administered in 1959 by Everett Franklin Lindquist as a competitor to the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test). The ACT has historically consisted of four tests: English, Reading, Math, and Science Reasoning. In 2005 the optional writing test was added to the ACT, which was copied from what the SAT was doing at the time.

The ACT is a factor in college admissions alongside class rank, GPA, extracurricular activities and grade trends.

Format
The format for the ACT usually consists of a:
- 45-minute English section with 75 questions
- 1 hour Math section with 60 questions
- Two 35 minute Reading and Science sections with 40 questions each
- Optional Writing Test with one essay lasting 30 minutes

The average ACT score is 21.1 and the highest score possible is a 36. When people ask, What kind of score do I need to get in to XXX University, the best answer is just good enough to get in. Admissions counselors change their standards yearly to adapt to the applicant pool for that year. The more candidates who apply means the higher the standards will be which cause scores to need to be higher.
