Addison’s disease is a rare endocrine disorder that affects the adrenal glands and causes a steroid hormone deficiency. The disease is named for the British physician who first described the disease in 1849, Dr. Thomas Addison. Treatment for Addison’s disease involves being on a lifelong regiment of hormone replacement medications. Addison’s is usually diagnosed through blood tests and medical imaging.
