About Adolf Hitler
Hitler was born in Austria, and moved to Germany when he was three. He grew up at the Austrian/German border, but identified as a German, much to his father's chagrin. The difficult relationship with his father resulted in physical abuse and estrangement.
Hitler was enrolled in several schools, but behavior problems caused him to repeatedly be expelled. As a young adult, he applied to art school several times, but was always rejected. When World War 1 began, Hitler served in the military. He was wounded in 1916, and returned to battle in 1917. After suffering from exposure to mustard gas in 1918. During this time, Hitler became obsessed with what he felt was his duty to ''save Germany.'' His anti-semitic views grew, and he began to devise a plan to take power.
Hitler joined the German Workers Party in 1919, and was the 55th member. Hitler impressed the leadership of the party, and was made the seventh member of the party's executive committee. Hitler gained notoriety for his speeches against monarchists, other leaders, Marxists, and Jews. Hitler's new influence led to schisms in the party, now the National Socialist German Workers Party, and a failed power coup by the leadership gave Hitler the leadership of the organization and the title of Fuhrer.
In 1923, Hitler attempted to overthrow the German government, and was arrested for treason. During his trial, he was given nearly unlimited time to speak, and his soaring oratory and nationalist themes resulted in even greater popularity and notoriety in the country. Though found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison, Hitler was pardoned in 1924, serving only about a year in prison.
Upon his release, Hitler reassembled the party and worked to promote his nationalist ideas by emphasizing the unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles and war reparations placed on the German nation. In 1932, following the Great Depression hitting the German economy, Hitler ran for President after becoming a German citizen. While he lost, taking second in the election, Hitler emerged as a viable player in German politics. In 1933, he was appointed as Chancellor of Germany, a position similar to Prime Minister in other parliamentary systems.
After securing power as Chancellor, Hitler worked to keep other parties from gaining control of the Parliament, and passed the Enabling Act, which gave his cabinet emergency legislative powers that circumvented the constitution. Essentially, it transferred Hitler's government into a legal dictatorship. In 1934, the President died, and Hitler's cabinet dissolved the office and granted the authority to the Chancellor. In 1938, scandals in leadership led Hitler to bring the armed forces under his authority, as well.
Hitler expanded the economy through increased industrialization and civil improvement in Germany. German women were encouraged to stay home and raise the family, while men worked in factories and arms development. Infrastructure improvements also were a hallmark of the German economy.
In 1939, Hitler's philosophy of racial purity was executed in the form of the Holocaust, the most expansive act of genocide in history. Initially targeting children with physical and developmental disabilities, the practice expanded to include Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Poles, and political opponents in the killings.
Hitler built strategic relationships with Japan, Italy, and Russia (though he reneged on this relationship), and began expanding power across Europe. World War II began as Hitler invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. On September 3, 1939, France and Britain declared war on Germany, but did not act immediately.
Hitler continued his campaign across Europe, ultimately turning on the Russians and began fighting a battle on two fronts. He began losing ground as the Russians pushed Nazi troops back to central Europe. By 1944, the Russians were closing in on the East and a Western Coalition on the West. As the situation became more dire, with the Russian troops just outside Berlin, Hitler married his long-time companion Eva Braun shortly after midnight on April 29, 1945, and on April 30, 1945, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
